India has made an impressive record, contributing almost 15.6 per cent of global progress in the Reproductive Health Index (RHI) for 2015. The RHI is a new indicator being introduced by the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) to monitor global progress on improving access to reproductive health, including family planning, safe abortion and sexual and gender-based violence (SGBV) services, and service quality. "Global progress on universal access to reproductive health continues to be a challenge. Yet, countries like India have made remarkable progress towards improving access to critical reproductive health services, contributing almost 15 per cent of global progress in the RHI in 2015," said UNFPA in a statement here. As per the RHI, in 2015, India improved by 6 points on the RHI, achieving an overall score of 74.9, including a seven point increase in contraceptive prevalence rate (CPR) to 64 per cent. It achieved an additional 2.8 million more women at risk of unintended pregnancy and 3.9 million fewer unsafe abortions. "There is no doubt that we have made significant progress in improving access to reproductive health services in India. But the work remains unfinished. There is no room for complacency," said Sunita Narain, director general of Research and Advocacy Division at the Center for Science and Environment (CSE) here. India is among the fastest growing economies globally, with a gross domestic product (GDP) of $2.2 trillion, an economic growth of 7.5 per cent in the first quarter of 2016 and an employment rate of 72.2 per cent. Narain said despite rapid economic growth, India's per capita income is stagnant and rising inequality persists, widening both the rural-urban wealth gap and the economic and educational gaps. "The RHI also shows an alarming rise in child marriage, especially among girls.
